Doom: The Dark Ages: Shield Rune Locations & Interactive Tracking Guide

In Doom: The Dark Ages, the Shield Saw is not just a defensive tool — it is a parry engine that fuels the Slayer's most powerful combat abilities. Shield Runes are the abilities that activate when a Perfect Parry lands on a Hell Surge (green-glowing demonic attacks and projectiles).

There are 4 Shield Runes in total, each unlocked automatically as a story pickup — none can be missed. All 4 are featured on their chapter pages across the Doom: The Dark Ages interactive maps.

All Four Shield Runes and Their Effects

Ground FissureChapter 9: Ancestral Forge. The first Rune. On a successful parry, a ground fissure tears forward in a straight line, damaging and faltering every demon it passes through. The falter staggers even the largest enemies, creating a brief window to follow up with melee or a weapon shot. Fully upgraded, it also Scorches demons hit by the fissure, causing them to drop Armor shards — a significant survivability boost on higher difficulties.

Holy SwarmChapter 11: Hellbreaker. On parry, a swarm of self-seeking ethereal daggers erupts and homes in on nearby demons automatically. Effective against tight clusters of fodder. Upgrades increase dagger count and damage per dagger but do not change the targeting or spread.

Auto TurretChapter 12: Sentinel Command Station. On parry, a shoulder-mounted turret activates and fires sustained ballistic rounds at the nearest single target. The most effective Rune for sustained boss and Leader combat — it deals constant damage while the Slayer focuses on dodging. The second upgrade (Health Extractor) causes every enemy hit by the turret to drop health pickups, directly improving survivability during prolonged encounters.

Heaven SplitterChapter 14: Spire of Nerathul. On parry, Hell Surge projectiles transform into energy bolts that call down lightning, stunning all nearby demons simultaneously. The widest crowd-control effect of any Rune. Universally rated the strongest — the final upgrade (Gigawatt) applies the Shock status to all affected demons, causing them to take increased damage from all attacks and to explode on death, chaining damage outward.

Equipping, Swapping, and Upgrading

Only one Shield Rune can be equipped at a time. Switch between collected Runes at any point via the Rune tab in the upgrade screen accessible from the Arsenal menu — swapping is free with no cooldown.

Each Rune has 3 purchasable upgrades at any Sentinel Shrine using Gold. Fully upgrading any single Rune unlocks the Powerful Investment trophy.

Three Mission Challenges Require Specific Runes

Three Mission Challenges are tied to specific Shield Runes being equipped — easy to miss if the wrong Rune is active:

  • Fault Line (Chapter 10) — "Affect 25 demons with the Ground Fissure Shield Rune." Ground Fissure is obtained at the end of Chapter 9 and will be the active Rune entering Chapter 10 — no manual swap needed.

  • Dispersion (Chapter 11) — "Damage 3 or more demons with a single Holy Swarm volley 5 times." Holy Swarm is found during Chapter 11 itself. Equip it as soon as it's collected and use it through the chapter's large enemy encounters.

  • Master Blaster (Chapter 14) — "Damage demons with 250 Auto Turret rounds." Chapter 14 automatically equips Heaven Splitter when it's collected. Switch back to Auto Turret immediately after picking up Heaven Splitter to continue building the Auto Turret counter before leaving the chapter.
